Reducing your organic waste with Bokashi home composting

Reducing your organic waste with Bokashi home composting - The Frenchie Gardener

All of our kitchen waste are usually going to the trash. And that’s even more a waste! Because when you grow vegetables, you will see that everything is connected.

EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED, THERE IS NO WASTE, JUST A SMARTER USE OF IT

Composting at home is easy and it will make you discover the perfect & balanced food cycle. The vegetables that we eat are nourishing and giving us necessary nutrients, vitamins, minerals, calories. There are parts we do not eat such as orange peelings, an apple core, the foliage from radishes. These organic food scraps should definitely not be thrown to the trash, because they will be the base of a great organic & homemade fertilizer which is called compost.

With a bokashi box, compost becomes extremely easy & space efficient for small balconies or terraces. You can place in the box all your organic food scraps which will decompose in the box with the help of an organic spray or powder designed to speed up the decomposition process. Every week, you will obtain a rich compost juice which is a great fertilizer for your plants (mix 1L of compost juice in 10L of water). The juice will have an orange colour but spoiler alert, no it does not smell good and it's normal! So pinch your nose, it's not meant to be your morning smoothy, but it will definitely make your plants happy.

Also every month and a half, you can open your box to take the lower decomposed layers. You can add these directly in your soil. It will give healthy organic nutrients to your soil to enhance its richness!

WHAT NATURE GAVE YOU IS JUST GOING BACK TO NATURE AND THEN BACK TO YOU

A lot of our waste actually have a lot of nutrients :  eggshells contains a lot of calcium, Teabags contains Nitrogen, Banana, Orange peels are rich in potassium and phosphorus. All these composted food scraps will give back nutrients to your soil and then to your growing plants.

So now that you are growing your own vegetables, you will eat healthier, and on top of that, you will reduce your waste by just using it smartly. Sounds like a fair deal, right?

WHICH BOKASHI COMPOSTER TO USE?

I personally would recommend two brands with which I had full satisfaction. The Urban Composter from Garantia is working great and I especially like the classy design. I would also recommend the Kitchen Composter from Bokashi Living, very space efficient. I experienced them both indoor & outdoor and you won't have any bad smell.

Happy Growing & Happy Compost!
